Jay Rodriguez returns home to Burnley
Jay returns back to his hometown club where he began his career.
He was the only academy player to be signed by Steve Cotterill after their apprenticeships with 6 players missing out.
Jay made his debut for Burnley in the Championship on 29 December 2007 and went on to make 128 appearances for the club. He won various awards during his time at the club including Burnley’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player in 2010-11 and the following season was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year.
A move to Southampton followed in the summer of 2012 where he played 35 of the 38 Premier League games that season.
Another fantastic year followed in 2013 when Jay scored 15 goals and his form resulted in his England debut on 15 November 2013 at Wembley Stadium against Chile.
Jay’s final season in Southampton was in 2016-17 where they finished up as EFL Cup Runner Up.
On 2 July 2017 he signed for West Bromwich Albion for £12 million making his debut in the opening game of the season. Jay made a total of 82 appearances for the club before his move to Burnley this summer.
Burnley begin their 2019/20 Premier League campaign against Southampton which should be a special day as he faces off against another of his former clubs.
This is now the third premier league move that Beswicks Sports have completed for the striker with combined deals worth in excess of £30 million.
Gary Mellor (Managing Director) said “It was a difficult decision for Jay as he’s loved his 2 years at West Brom and will be leaving behind a lot of good people but the chance to return to his hometown club and play premier league football was too much of an opportunity to turn down”
Good luck Jay!
